Glen Stuart Merinos takes home Australian Superfine Wool Growers' Association grand champion fleece
A Tasmanian stud has been awarded the grand champion fleece in the Australian Superfine Wool Growers' Association 2020-21 competition.
Carol and Allan Phillips, Glen Stuart Merinos, won with a score of 98.1.
The pair also won the 90s quality class along with first place in the Tasmanian region.
"We feel very honoured to win the Grand champion Fleece award in the ASWGA Fleece competition this year, considering that the fleeces were drawn from many of the best superfine woolgrowers in Australia," the couple said in a statement.
"It was fortunate that we had an excellent season here in Tasmania for growing wool.
"We would like to thank the sponsors Australian Council of Wool Exporters & Processors Inc, the judges, and everyone else who assisted in making this competition happen.
"Congratulations to all the other winners, and placegetters!
"Hopefully we can all enjoy some of the good wool prices on offer for superfine wool."
There were 73 fleeces entered in this year's competition, which was judged by Mark Hedley of AWN and Tim Marwedel of G Schneider.
The 80's class was won by Kathy and Trevor Mibus, Glenara Merinos, Hamilton, on 95.6, while the 74's was awarded to Victoria and Bradley Venning, Kilmarnock, Hamilton, on 93.7.
Lesleann and Mark Waters, Riverton, New England, took home first place in the 70's on 89.6.
The Ararat/Barunah class was won by Heather and Geoff Phillips, Currawong, with a score of 93.6, and Katherine and David Picker, Clear Hill, won the Goulburn/Yass section on 90.3.
Kathy and Trevor Mibus, Glenara Merinos, also won the Hamilton area class on 96.1.
The Mudgee section was awarded to Irene and Daryl Croake, Oak Hills, on 94.65.
Janet, Tony and Cameron Gall, Wilson's Creek, won the New England section on 91.4.
The Western Australia section was awarded to Faye and Jim Pepper, Mumballview, on 85.9.
The committee congratulated all competitors and said the results were very close.
The Australian Council of Wool Exporters & Processors sponsored the grand trophy and the Australian Wool Testing Authority arranged the transport of fleeces for judging.
Natsun sponsored the quality class section with Nutrien Wool, Dyson Jones, Fox & Lillie Rural, Riverina Wool Testers and Zoetis sponsoring the regional awards.
The committee also thanked Mark Hedley and AWN for assisting with space made available for storing fleeces and judging.
